How to grow veggies and save water.

Here in California we are experiencing a serious drought and have been for the last few years.  This year we have been asked to cut back on watering.  So what does this mean for growing food?

Here are a few ways to optimize your watering while reducing your usage.

  1.  Put in a drip system.  It will make your gardening a lot easier and reduce the amount of time you spend watering.  With a drip system you can make it as simple as you want.  This means you don’t have to stand and water(which is inefficient) for an hour.
  2. Reduce the amount of space of your garden if it’s large.  You can grow a lot of veggies in a small space if you plant closer.
  3. Mulch!  This will really help reduce water use because the mulch will keep the water from evaporating and drying up around your plants.  You might also notice that you won’t have to turn on the drip as much because the soil will stay moist longer.  Make sure when you cover with mulch that the drip is under the mulch.  You don’t want the mulch to keep the roots from getting watered.    Happy Gardening!   ~ J         potluck June 2015 002
